As the center of the dynamic industrial region Rhine-Main, Frankfurt is one of the leading centers of commerce in Europe. Countless international firms – with a preponderance in the fields of manufacturing, banking, wholesale and export – extend their tentacles outwards towards the markets of the world. What makes Frankfurt so attractive to investors when compared with other European cities? Three things: its central location, its excellent infrastructure and a degree of cosmopolitanism that is virtually unrivalled.
Around 700,000 people live, and over 464,000 work, in the metropolitan area. If the entire Rhine-Main region is considered, the number of inhabitants rises to 5.52 million, with 365,000 businesses employing 2.8 million people and contributing 200.5 billion euro annually to Germany's GDP. In the field of education, too, Frankfurt sets high standards: in addition to Goethe University with its 35,000 students and the University of Applied Sciences Frankfurt am Main, the city boasts countless other top-flight teaching and research institutions, notable among the city's 10 universities, 13 international schools and 35 research institutes being the Senckenberg Research Institute, the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management and the German National Library.
